The Challenge

Alan would like to design a protective cover for his communication device. Alan uses an AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) device which enables him to engage with others in the community. He is looking for a solution that will enable him to use his AAC device outdoors in various weather conditions, including bright sunlight and rain.

The Solution

In 2024, RMIT student Dijana Jovanovic created an incredibly light cover to protect Alan’s device from light rain and sun glare. It is made of waterproof nylon, with a removable polypropylene hood.

The original design, developed by a student team in 2023, featured a water resistant and anti-glare cover to protect Alan’s AAC device while he is outside. The cover was made from transparent acrylic, with an adjustable shade top. There was a clamp on the back which allowed the cover to be mounted onto a wheelchair, or other objects.
