The Challenge

Artists at Bayley Arts are preparing for a fashion show and learning to sew independently. A major barrier is feeding fabric through the sewing machine—a task that requires coordination, visual attention, and hand control. It’s physically and cognitively demanding, especially for artists with limited mobility, low vision, or fine motor challenges.

They’re currently creating garments for the fashion show, a project that blends creative expression with skill-building and independence. These sessions are joyful and busy, but with only 2 teachers and 1 volunteer, every moment of independence counts.

The Concept

This custom sewing extension table sits snugly around your sewing machine, creating a smooth, flat acrylic surface that’s level with your sewing bed for better fabric support and comfort. It features a rounded top edge so fabric glides effortlessly, and sturdy 3D-printed legs that are both detachable and height-adjustable, making it easy to set up, store, or adjust for different workspaces.

The table can be used on its own, or paired with an optional magnetic slide rail, a clever add-on that helps feed fabric straight through the machine without constant guiding by hand. The rail mounts onto the tabletop using built-in attachment points, and its magnetic fabric holders keep material securely in place as you sew.
