About

Communication books can be heavy and awkward to hold and use. It can be cumbersome to have to hold and support the book while also trying to use it for communication. Books are also often stowed on the back of a wheelchair, leading to lost opportunities to communicate.

The Concept

In the process of developing the “Speech Stand” product, the TOM team created this open source communication book stand design. This design builds on the original design developed with Kaspar at the 2021 Makeathon. This solution allows mounting of A4 and A5 books in portrait or landscape configuration. An adapter plate can also be attached to allow use with a a mounting system.

The team worked with the Nepean School to develop and refine the design. They have been incredibly generous with their insights, feedback and time and we can’t thank them enough.
