SEEDs Communal garden in Brunswick runs a composting initiative where garden group participants collect food waste from the local businesses to process at the garden in their commercial dehydrator. The compost that is produced is then sorted by volunteers into paper compost bags. This concept is designed to enable individuals with strength +/- motor skill impairments to independently pack compost bags without assistance from a support person. Monash University Industrial Design students worked on developing solutions to help lift the buckets.
The students designed the Bag Buddy; a funnel where the compost bag attaches underneath to help direct the compost into the bag as Adam scoops. The bag can then be removed when it is full. After reviewing with Adam, the TOM team added a hinge to the funnel to help Adam connect the bag. Adam is enjoying being able to fill compost bags more easily and independently at the garden now.
