About

The Challenge

Mary is in search of a custom exercise apparatus to enable her to increase her functional capacity and support her health. Impacted by Thalidomide, Mary lives with quadruple shortened limbs  making it challenging to undertake regular resistance and whole-body exercise. Together with her exercise physiologist Simon, Mary would like a solution to enable greater scope of physical therapy and conditioning.

This project reflects work we were involved in previously; however, the design no longer aligns with our current focus due to the nature of the solution or the challenge. We are now more mindful of the safety and suitability of DIY design solutions. We share this in the spirit of acknowledging the valuable contributions of our volunteers and supporting open collaboration.

The Concept

Mary’s team have developed a customised workout machine which focuses on core strength exercises. Mary can rotate her torso and push forward against resistance. Mary can also brace her feet underneath a fixed bar and perform traditional sit-ups.
