About

The Challenge

Beatrice is a child with a developmental condition characterised by frequently mouthing, sucking or biting her hands and fingers. Beatrice’s challenge involved finding a method for limiting her ability to bite her hands, yet still giving her the independence that she needs to play.

This project reflects work we were involved in previously; however, the design no longer aligns with our current focus due to the nature of the solution or the challenge. We are now more mindful of the safety and suitability of DIY design solutions. We share this in the spirit of acknowledging the valuable contributions of our volunteers and supporting open collaboration.

The Concept

Team Beatrice designed an elbow brace to limit Beatrice’s ability to move her hand to her mouth, and developed a custom leather mitten to protect her skin. The low-cost solution can be made with off-the-shelf parts, and some sewing knowledge.
