Multifunctional Grabber
A customised grabber that enables an individual to more easily and independently pick up various objects and reposition their legs as needed.
The Challenge
Lou is an electric wheelchair user that would like a solution to help her pick things up off the floor. Most pickup sticks on the market lack the dexterity to grab small objects, such as coins or buttons, as well as wider objects. Lou would like a solution which is easy to use, maintain, and requires little grip strength.
Lou’s teams have created two unique prototype solutions.
Team ‘Innov8tors’ designed an extendable suction cup, with magnetic flippers and a silicon grip to pick up items. They also included a ‘leg lifter’ so Lou can move her leg when required.
Team ‘Dura Claw’ designed a pickup stick with three retractable claws, allowing it to pick up a broad range of objects.
