About

The Challenge

Geoff would like a way to communicate with his support staff while in bed at night. Geoff lives in an assisted living environment, and has to wait until the overnight staff check in on him to be able to express his needs. Geoff and his team would like a device that he can interact with using his head/neck to signal for assistance during the night.

This project reflects work we were involved in previously; however, the design no longer aligns with our current focus due to the nature of the solution or the challenge. We are now more mindful of the safety and suitability of DIY design solutions. We share this in the spirit of acknowledging the valuable contributions of our volunteers and supporting open collaboration.

The Concept

The students worked with Geoff and the staff to evaluate different methods. The team came up with a noise detection system which would trigger an alert for the support team. With further development, the team would like to innovate this to recognise specific voice commands from Geoff.
