About

The Challenge

Jill is a wheelchair user who came to TOM: Melbourne with her Occupational Therapist Reece. Together, they would like to create a pressure-sensitive system with feedback for wheelchair users. Alerts would help with posture and aid in reducing pressure-related injuries.

This project reflects work we were involved in previously; however, the design no longer aligns with our current focus due to the nature of the solution or the challenge. We are now more mindful of the safety and suitability of DIY design solutions. We share this in the spirit of acknowledging the valuable contributions of our volunteers and supporting open collaboration.

The Concept

Jill’s team created a sensor array that sits under her in her wheelchair to detect potentially harmful movements or postures. Alerts are sent to her support workers to help her reposition and maintain good posture.
