About

The Challenge

Mandy is a quadruple amputee and a motivational speaker. The prosthetics that she uses limit the range of motion in her knee, so she cannot use standard or recumbent bicycles. Mandy’s challenge is to create a device or adaptation to allow her to ride either a bicycle or tricycle.

This project reflects work we were involved in previously; however, the design no longer aligns with our current focus due to the nature of the solution or the challenge. We are now more mindful of the safety and suitability of DIY design solutions. We share this in the spirit of acknowledging the valuable contributions of our volunteers and supporting open collaboration.

The Concept

Mandy’s team combined two existing bike frames to make her a new tricycle.

Adaptations included a mechanism to allow for back pedal brakes and gears, an electric motor, and new pedal and handlebar placement to allow her better control and reach with prosthetics. The bike was also painted bright red on Mandy’s request.
