The Challenge
John is both a power and manual wheelchair user and would like a device to be able to clean the wheels on either of his chairs. Inspired by the challenge posed by Mandy in the 2018 TOM Developer Groups, John and a final year product design engineering student worked together over 8 months to develop a low-tech, versatile solution to suit John’s needs.
The Concept
John and the student created a non-motorized, drive-through track that can clean most types of manual and power wheelchairs. The track is lined with brushes that self-adjust based on the size and position of the wheels as they move through the cleaner. The base of the track is also covered in short bristles which clean wheel tread.
