About

Cai is a 15 year old manual wheelchair user. He wants to be able to carry items easily in his lap without them slipping off when he uses his arms to propel his wheelchair. He is unable to use his hands to prevent items from sliding, falling, or spilling, such as when he gets a drink or a bowl of food from the kitchen.

Three separate images of the lap mounted carry tray. From left to right; the tray is shown being used with a laptop, a mug with a silicone cover on top, and a person activating the pop-up dogs.
The Solution

The students produced a multi-purpose surface that allows Cai to transport everyday items in his lap without them sliding off when he propels his wheelchair. The surface has pop-up pegs that can be used to secure items, or can stow away when he wants flat surface for drawing or other activities.
