Joanne has a condition that causes weakness on the left side of her body as well as balance difficulties. She has found Lawn Bowls to be a very rewarding game as it is something she can play against people without disabilities and be competitive. She currently requires someone to be on green with her to pick up the Bowls from the ground. Without this support she fatigues rapidly and is unable to complete a game. She would like a device that assists with lifting Lawn Bowls from the ground for someone with limited use one arm. Existing Bowls lifters require two arms for use.
This powered lawn bowl lifting aid uses an electric screwdriver to raise the bowl. This device uses a similar one way flap mechanism to the manual bowls lifter, also developed within the same RMIT Industrial Design studio.
To use this device, the user raises the plaftorm, slides the base of the device around the bowl to be lifted, activates the screwdriver, to lower the platform over the bowl, then activates the screwdriver in the reverse direction to lift the bowl to the desired height. The device is light weight at 770g total.
